What is this medication for?

Urinary Alkaliniser Effervescent Granules is a medication that makes your urine less acidic. It is used to help relieve symptoms like painful and frequent urination, burning sensations and discomfort. These symptoms are associated with urinary tract infections (infections that affect parts of your urinary system such as your bladder or kidneys).

How should I take or use this medication?

  • You may take this medication with or without food.
  • Add the contents of the sachet to a glass of room temperature water and mix well before drinking.
  • Do not exceed the maximum dose as recommended by your healthcare professional.

What should I do if I forget to take or use this medication?

  • This medication is to be taken only on a “as-needed” basis; there is no need to take the medication if you are not experiencing any symptoms.

What precautions should I take when taking or using this medication?

Inform your healthcare professional if:

  • You are allergic to this medication or any of the other ingredients of this medication.
  • You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • You are taking any other medications, including supplements, traditional medications and herbal remedies.
  • You have kidney problems, heart failure, or high blood pressure.
  • You are on a low sodium diet.

What are some common side effects of this medication? ​

Common side effect may include diarrhoea, which is usually mild.

What are some rare but serious side-effects that I need to seek medical advice immediately? 

The symptoms of a drug allergy include one or more of the following:

  • Swollen face/eyes/lips/tongue
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Itchy skin rashes over your whole body

Systemic alkalosis (a condition where your blood becomes too alkaline) and hypernatremia (high sodium levels in your blood) may occur with prolonged and excessive use. Symptoms may include:

  • Confusion or changes in mental state
  • Muscle weakness or cramps
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Excessive thirst
  • Swelling in hands, feet, or legs

If you experience any of these symptoms, you should stop your medication and see your healthcare professional immediately.

You should also see your doctor if:

  • You have urinary pain or irritation thar does not go away for more than 48 hours
  • You notice blood in your urine
  • You have fever or pain in the lower back

What food or medication should I avoid when I take or use this medication?

  • Avoid taking antacids while using this medication as this may cause your blood to become too alkaline.

  • This medication may affect how some medications work in your body. Inform your doctor if you are taking antibiotics (especially quinolones like ciprofloxacin), lithium, or other medications.

How should I store this medication?

Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep this medication away from children.

How do I throw away this medication safely? ​

Pack this medication into a black trash bag and seal it tightly before throwing into the rubbish chute or bin.
