What is this medication for?
Lomustine is commonly used to treat brain tumors.
How should I take or use this medication?
Lomustine should be taken as a single dose once every 6 weeks, on an empty stomach, 1 hour before food or 2 hours after food (to prevent stomach upset or throwing up).
Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Do not chew or crush or open the capsules.
Special handling of the medication is required. Check with your healthcare professional before handling the drug.
What should I do if I forget to take or use this medication?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for your next dose, proceed to take the next dose and skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses at the same time.
Do not repeat the dose if vomiting occurs after a dose has been administered. Consult the doctor or pharmacist for advice on what to do next.
What precautions should I take when taking or using this medication?
Inform your healthcare professional if:
- You are allergic to this medication or any of the other ingredients of this medication.
- You or your partner is pregnant or planning to become pregnant
- Women should use effective birth control during treatment and for at least 2 weeks after the final lomustine dose
- Men should use effective birth control during treatment and for at least 3.5 months after the final lomustine dose
- You are breastfeeding
- Do not breastfeed during treatment and for at least 2 weeks after the final lomustine dose
- You are taking any other medications, including supplements, traditional medications and herbal remedies.
What are some common side effects of this medication?
Decrease in white blood cell count

Decrease in the number of red blood cells (anaemia)

| Nausea or vomiting |

Mouth ulcers or sores

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before receiving any vaccines or using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medications, vitamins, supplements and herbal products.
Avoid eating raw, uncooked food or under-cooked food as your immunity is weakened.
How should I store this medication?
Store in a cool and dry place, protected from light. Keep this medication away from children.
How do I throw away this medication safely?
Pack the medication into a bag and bring it back to the pharmacy where you received the medication from.
