How should I take or use this medication?

Using a Pre-filled Pen
Preparation
Step 1: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, then wipe them dry.
Step 2: Check the medication in the pen. Depending on the medication, it should appear either clear and colourless, or contain particles. Do not use it if it looks unusual (e.g. discoloured, cloudy when it should be clear, or contains particles when it should not).
If your medication requires mixing, gently roll the pen between your palms or slowly turn it upside down and back a few times as instructed. Do not shake the pen. Check with your healthcare professional if you are unsure.
Step 3: If your medication needs to be stored in the refrigerator, take it out and leave it at room temperature to reduce discomfort during injection.
Step 4: If your pen requires a needle to be attached, wipe the tip of the pen with an alcohol swab and allow it to dry before attaching the needle. Remove the protective cap and attach the needle securely to the pen.
Note: Some pens come with a needle already attached. Please check the instructions for your specific pen or ask your healthcare professional.
Step 5: If your pen requires a flow check, turn the dial to the priming amount as instructed, then press the injection button. You should see a small drop of medication appear at the needle tip, confirming the pen is working correctly and the needle is not blocked.

Step 6: Turn the dial to your prescribed dose as instructed by your healthcare professional.
Step 7: If injecting into the stomach area, inject at least 2 finger-widths away from the belly button. Avoid skin that is irritated, bruised, scarred, or has lumps.
Administration
Step 1: Sit or lie down in a comfortable and relaxed position.
Step 2: Using your thumb and index finger, gently pinch the skin at the injection site to create a skin fold.
Step 3: Insert the needle straight into the skin fold at a right angle (90 degrees).
Step 4: Press the injection button slowly and hold it down until all the medication has been injected. You may hear or feel a click depending on your pen.
Note: Depending on your medication, you may need to either release the skin fold before pressing the injection button, or maintain the skin fold throughout. Please check the instructions for your specific medication or ask your healthcare professional.
Step 5: Once the medication has been fully injected, keep the injection button pressed down while removing the needle from the skin. Gently press the alcohol swab over the injection site. Do not rub or massage the area.
Step 6: Replace the needle cap carefully and dispose of the used pen and needle in a puncture-proof container (e.g. a thick plastic bottle with a tight-fitting cap or a sharps box).
Step 7: For your next injection, choose a different spot to inject. Rotating injection sites helps to prevent dents or lumps from forming under the skin (lipodystrophy).
Using a Pre-filled Syringe
Preparation

Step 2: Check the medication in the syringe or pen. Depending on the medication, it should appear either clear and colourless, or contain particles. Do not use it if it looks unusual (e.g. discoloured, cloudy when it should be clear, or contains particles when it should not).
Check with your healthcare professional if you are unsure what your medication should look like.
Step 3: If your medication needs to be stored in the refrigerator, take it out and leave it at room temperature to reduce discomfort during injection.
Step 4: Remove the protective cap and attach the needle securely to the syringe if required.
Step 5: Gently tap the syringe and slowly push the plunger upwards to remove any air bubbles.
Note: Some medications do not require removal of air bubbles. Please check the instructions for your specific medication or ask your healthcare professional.
