What is Pre-diabetes?

Pre-diabetes is a condition in which the blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be in the diabetes range.

Without lifestyle changes, at least 35% of persons with pre-diabetes in Singapore will progress to type 2 diabetes over 8 years. Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition that can lead to health issues such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, or loss of limbs.

Pre-Diabetes Prevention

Diabetes can be prevented with healthy lifestyle habits and regular monitoring of your health condition. If you have pre-diabetes, now is the time for prevention. The Pre-DICTED programme can help you take charge of your health to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.

Pre-DICTED programme

Take part in the programme if you:

  • Are aged 18 to 64
  • Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 23 and above
  • Have pre-diabetes

Fasting Blood Glucose

In the programme, you will be randomly assigned to the standard care group or the treatment group.

Participants in the standard care group will be referred to primary care providers for individual lifestyle counselling and follow-up care.

Participants in the treatment group will attend a series of group-based lifestyle intervention classes at the Health Promotion Board, for six weeks. At the classes, participants will be coached on healthy eating habits and participate in group exercises. In addition, cash incentives will be offered to those who have achieved and maintained a five per cent or more weight loss from their baseline weight.

All participants will undergo health checks every six months during which blood tests will be done to monitor their condition.
