Vaginal pessaries are a form of medication that is inserted directly into the vagina, where they dissolve or melt to deliver medicine locally. They can contain different kinds of medication (such as antifungals, antibiotics or hormones) to treat different conditions affecting the vagina.

Step 1: Wash your hands and vaginal area with gentle soap and water. Dry it thoroughly.

Step 2: Remove the pessary from its packaging. Do note that :

  • Some medications are pre-inserted into an applicator.

  • Some are equipped with a separate applicator, where you will need to insert the pessary into the applicator.

  • Use your fingers if no applicators are supplied.
  • Note: During pregnancy, the pessary should be inserted without using an applicator.

Step 3: Lie on your back with your knees bent and legs slightly apart.

Step 4: Gently insert the pessary (pointed end first) or applicator fully into the vagina.

  • If using an applicator, push the plunger till it stops to release the pessary.
  • Remove the applicator if you are using one.

Step 5: Wash your hands.

Step 6: Clean the applicator if it is reusable, otherwise discard it after use.



What else should I know about using pessaries?

Use the pessary for as long as directed by your doctor or pharmacist, even during your menstrual period.

Avoid sexual intercourse during treatment. Use a sanitary napkin or panty liner to prevent the medication from leaking and staining your clothes.

How to store the medication/medical device?

Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep this medication away from children.

How do I throw away this medication safely?

Pack this medication in a black trash bag and seal it tightly before throwing it into the rubbish chute or bin.
