Olopatadine and Mometasone Furoate (Ryaltris®)

What is this medication for?

Ryaltris® is used to treat moderate to severe symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitis is the inflammation of the nasal cavity, which leads to sneezing, itchy nose, blocked or runny nose symptoms.

Ryaltris® contains two active ingredients — olopatadine and mometasone furoate. Olopatadine works by blocking the effects of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergy symptoms. Mometasone furoate is a corticosteroid that reduces and prevents inflammation. Together, they help relieve symptoms such as a blocked or runny nose, nasal itching, sneezing and eye symptoms.

How should I take or use this medication?

• Do not stop using your medication without checking with your healthcare professional. 

• Ryaltris® is a nasal spray for use in your nose only. Avoid spraying Ryaltris® into the eyes or mouth. 

• Administer using the following steps below: 

Preparing the nasal spray bottle (Priming)
	Step 1: Shake the bottle for a minimum of 10 seconds. Then remove the purple dust cap from the nozzle tip of the bottle.
	Step 2:  Hold the nasal spray bottle firmly and upright with your index and middle finger on either side of the spray nozzle unit (on finger rests) while supporting the grooved base of the bottle with your thumb.  Before first use, spray the product 6 times or until a fine mist appears, away from eyes and face. If you have not used Ryaltris® for 14 or more days, you will need to prime the pump with only 2 sprays or until a fine mist appears.

Administering the medication using the nasal spray bottle
	Step 1: Gently blow your nose to clear your nostrils.
	Step 2: Shake the bottle well before each use. Remove the purple dust cap from the nozzle tip of the bottle. Hold the bottle firmly with your index and middle finger on either side of the spray nozzle unit (on finger rests) while supporting the grooved base of the bottle with your thumb.
	Step 3: Tilt your head forward slightly.
	Step 4: Hold one nostril closed with a finger.
	Step 5: Insert the end of the spray nozzle tip into the other nostril, pointing it slightly toward the outside of the nose, away from the nasal septum (the wall between the two nostrils).
	Step 6: Keep the bottle upright and press down one time quickly and firmly on the finger rests to activate the pump. Breathe in gently through your nose as you spray.
	Step 7: Then breathe out through your mouth. Repeat Steps 3 to 5 for the other nostril. Do not blow your nose for at least 15 minutes after using Ryaltris®, to make sure that you receive the full dose.
	Step 8: After each use, wipe the white spray nozzle tip with a clean dry tissue or cloth. Replace the purple dust cap tightly onto the nozzle.

Troubleshooting if nozzle tip gets blocked 

• Remove the spray nozzle unit by gently pulling upward. Remove the purple dust cap and place only the spray nozzle unit in warm water to soak. 

• After soaking the spray nozzle tip for 15 minutes, rinse the spray nozzle unit and purple dust cap with warm water and allow them to dry completely. 

• You should clean your nasal spray at least once a week to stop it from getting blocked up. 

• Do not try to unblock the spray nozzle tip by inserting a pin or other sharp object. This will damage the spray nozzle tip, and you may not get the correct dose of medicine. 

What should I do if I forget to take or use this medication?

If there are no specific instructions on when to take a missed dose from your healthcare professional, take your missed dose as soon as you remember, if it is not close to the next dose.

For example, if you usually take your medication once a day at 8am and you miss the dose, you can still take the dose if you remember by 8pm on the same day (within 12 hours of your usual timing).

What precautions should I take when taking or using this medication?

Inform your healthcare professional if:

• You are allergic to this medication or any of the other ingredients of this medication.

• You are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

• You are taking any other medications, including supplements, traditional medications and herbal remedies.

• You have eye or vision problems, such as cataracts (clouding of the lens in the eye) or glaucoma (an increased pressure in your eyes).

• You are taking other steroid medicine by mouth or as an injection.

• You are recovering from recent nasal surgery, nasal trauma or nasal ulcers.

• You have ongoing infection or any other medical conditions.

What are some common side effects of this medication? ​

These side-effects may be temporary. If they persist or become bothersome, please discuss with your healthcare professional.

• Unpleasant or bitter taste in the mouth

  • This is a common but temporary side effect. Rinse your mouth with water after use if you experience this.

• Nosebleeds (epistaxis)

  • If nosebleeds are mild and infrequent, inform your doctor at your next visit. If nosebleeds are severe or do not stop, seek medical attention immediately.

• Nasal discomfort, nasal dryness, or runny nose

  • Inform your doctor if these symptoms bother you or do not go away.

• Headache

  • Mild pain can be relieved by taking Paracetamol. Inform your doctor if the headache does not get better.

Most of the side-effects listed here will improve with time. Speak with your healthcare professional if any of them continues, worsens, or affects your daily life.

In some very rare occasions, Ryaltris® may cause sleepiness or drowsiness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything that needs you to be alert until you know how Ryaltris® affects you. Do not drink alcohol or take any other medicines that may cause you to feel sleepy while using Ryaltris®.

What are some rare but serious side-effects that I need to seek medical advice immediately? 

The symptoms of a drug allergy include one or more of the following:

• Swollen face/eyes/lips/tongue

• Difficulty in breathing

• Itchy skin rashes over your whole body

If you experience any of these symptoms, you should stop your medication and see your healthcare professional immediately.

Other rare but serious side effects include:

• Hole in the nasal septum (nasal septal perforation) 

• Whistling sound when breathing through your nose. 

• Oral thrush (throat irritation, hoarse voice, cough and white patches in the mouth)

• Any persistent pain or burning when eating or drinking, or notice white, cottage cheese-like patches in the mouth or throat.

If you experience any of the above symptoms, you should stop your medication and see your healthcare professional immediately.

How should I store this medication?

Store upright with dust cap on at room temperature. Do not store in the freezer or refrigerate. Keep this medication away from children. 

How do I throw away this medication safely? ​

Pack this medication into a black trash bag and seal it tightly before throwing into the rubbish chute or bin.

When should i throw away this medication? 

Discard medication 60 days after opening.
