What is this medication for?
AREDS/AREDS 2 supplements are made up of a number of ingredients, including antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, that is formulated to help with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is a disease that slowly damages the retina (the light sensitive layer of tissue in the back of the eye) and can lead to loss of central vision or blindness as it worsens. The AREDS formulation has been shown to reduce the chances of AMD getting worse. However, it does not prevent the onset of the disease.
The original AREDS formulation contains:
- Vitamin C 500 mg
- Vitamin E 400 IU
- Copper 2 mg
- Zinc 80 mg
- Beta-Carotene 15 mg
A later study showed that a newer formulation, known as AREDS 2, further reduced the risk of AMD. The formulation contains:
- Vitamin C 500 mg
- Vitamin E 400 IU
- Copper 2 mg
- Zinc 80 mg
- Lutein 10 mg
- Zeaxanthin 2 mg
Most AREDS supplements on the market follow the newer AREDS 2 formulation. This is because beta-carotene in the original formula was found to increase the risk of lung cancer among smokers. This risk was removed by replacing beta-carotene with lutein and zeaxanthin in AREDS 2, which was found to be similarly or more effective in protecting against advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
