Nystatin Suspension

Nystatin is used for the treatment of oral thrush or oral fungal infections, also known as oral candidiasis. Nystatin belongs to a group of medicines called antifungals. Nystatin works by killing the fungi or yeast that causes the infection.

​What is this medication used for

Nystatin is used for the treatment of oral thrush or oral fungal infections, also known as oral candidiasis. Nystatin belongs to a group of medicines called antifungals. Nystatin works by killing the fungi or yeast that causes the infection.

 

Dosage and How to Use 

Adults​​
4 - 6ml to be swished in the mouth four times a day, for up to 14 days. The suspension should be retained in the mouth for as long as possible (several minutes) before swallowing.

Infants and children 6 months and older
​1ml to be applied on the affected area in the mouth four times a day, for up to 14 days.

Shake the bottle well before using.

​Denture wearers need to properly clean and maintain their dentures during treatment with this medication.

 

Side Effects, Precautions, Contraindication

Before you use this medication

Consult your physician if you have any health conditions (such as HIV or AIDS, autoimmune diseases, organ or stem cell transplant, or cancer) or are taking any medications (such as corticosteroids) that cause lowered immunity.

This medicine should be avoided if you have a known history of hypersensitivity (allergy) to nystatin or any of the other listed ingredients in the product.

​Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have diabetes, kidney disease or are pregnant/breastfeeding.

 

Interactions with other medications

Do inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or plan to take other medications, nutritional supplements or herbal products.

 

Side effects

Common side effects: diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain or vomiting.
Rare side effects: Stevens-Johnson syndrome, hypersensitivity reactions.

Handling and Storage

Keep out of reach and sight of children.
Keep this medicine in its original container until use.
Store in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight. 

 

When to seek further medical advice

Inform your doctor and/or pharmacist immediately if you experience any allergic symptoms or symptoms of serious side effects (e.g. swelling of eyes and lips, rashes which resembles mosquito bites or are blistering or peeling, difficulty in breathing, fever, chills or sore throat and sudden and severe stomach pain, diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting).

​You should see some improvements in your symptoms within 2-3 days. Do consult your doctor if the symptoms in the mouth (e.g. redness, soreness, creamy white coating) persist or worsen after treatment.
