Glucosamine is a natural component of the fluid around our joints. It may help to treat osteoarthritis and reduce joint pain and stiffness, especially of the knee, by strengthening the cartilage and increasing the fluid around the joints.

What is this medicine used for?

Glucosamine is a natural component of the fluid around our joints. It may help to treat osteoarthritis and reduce joint pain and stiffness, especially of the knee, by strengthening the cartilage and increasing the fluid around the joints.

Dosage and How to use

When should I take the medication?

The usual dose is 1 tablet (500mg) taken three times a day, or 3 tablets taken once daily.

How should it be taken?

Glucosamine can be taken with or without food.

Side Effects, Precautions, Contraindication

What side effects can this medicine cause?

Glucosamine causes few, if any, side effects. However, some people may experience gastric discomforts, such as nausea or gas.

Some glucosamine products may contain shellfish, this may cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to shellfish.

Other Precautions

Glucosamine may increase the effect of blood-thinning medications (e.g. aspirin). Inform your doctor or pharmacist about any other medications you may be taking before you begin taking glucosamine. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you wish to start another medication while on glucosamine.

There is insufficient information on the safety of glucosamine use in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding while on glucosamine.

Handling and Storage

Store glucosamine in a cool, dry place, away from light.

What else should I know about glucosamine and joint health?

It may take 6-8 weeks after taking glucosamine before you notice any improvement in your osteoarthritis.

Regular exercise such as aerobics, swimming and walking can also maintain joint health and strengthen the muscles that support your joints. Weight loss can also decrease the stress on your joints and help with the symptoms of osteoarthritis.
