Doxycycline Capsule

​​​​Doxycycline is a tetracycline-type antibiotic that is used to eliminate bacteria that cause certain types of infection, including pneumonia, acne and venereal disease. In some cases, doxycycline can be used for malaria prophylaxis as well.

Dosage and How to Use​

When should I take the medication?​

Doxycycline is usually taken once or twice a day.

How should it be taken​?

Doxycycline comes as a capsule. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water and remain upright for at least 30 minutes after taking to reduce the risk of oesophageal irritation. Take with food to minimise stomach upset.

Missed a ​Dose​​

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. Take any remaining doses for that day at evenly spaced intervals.

Side Effects, Precautions, Contraindication

What side effects can this medicine cause? What can I do about th​em?

  • Nausea or upset stomach. Take the medication with meals or a light snack.
  • Diarrhoea, itching of the rectum or vagina, sore mouth or skin rash. If symptoms are severe or persist for more than two days, contact your doctor.

Other precautions​

  • ​Consult doctor if the symptoms of infection persist after completing the course.
  • Discard any unused part of your prescription if your doctor asks you stop taking it.
  • Doxycycline should not be taken by young children, pregnant women or nursing mothers. Contact doctor if you are pregnant while taking doxycycline.
  • Certain medications such as antacids (containing aluminium or magnesium) or calcium-, iron- or zinc-containing products may decrease the absorption of doxycycline. So, take doxycycline 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking them.
  • ​Inform your doctor or pharmacist before taking other medicines while you on it.

Special instr​uctions

  • ​Complete the course of antibiotic as instructed even after the infection appears to have gone away. This is to avoid recurrent infection.
  • Doxycycline may aggravate sunburn. So, limit your time in the sun, use sunscreen on exposed parts and cover your body with clothing while in the sun.

Handling and Storage​​

Keep at room temperature below 25°C and a cool dry place. Do not put in the refrigerator.
