Pantoprazole Tablet

Pantoprazole is used for the relief of heartburn symptoms associated with stomach acid reflux. Pantoprazole belongs to a group of medicines called ‘proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)’. Pantoprazole works by reducing the amount of acid produced in your stomach.

​What is this medication used for

Pantoprazole is used for the relief of heartburn symptoms associated with stomach acid reflux. Pantoprazole belongs to a group of medicines called 'proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)'. Pantoprazole works by reducing the amount of acid produced in your stomach.

 

Dosage and How to Use 

Adults 18 years old and above

One tablet (20mg) to be taken once daily for up to 14 days. Tablet should not be chewed or crushed and should be swallowed whole with water 1 hour before a meal.

 

Side Effects, Precautions, Contraindication

Before you use this medication

Medical advice should be sought before use if you experience any of the following: heartburn for over 3 months; chest pain or shoulder pain with shortness of breath; sweating, pain spreading to arms, neck or shoulder or light-headedness; frequent wheezing, particularly with heartburn; unexplained weight loss; nausea or vomiting; stomach pain; pain when swallowing food; vomiting with blood; bloody or black tarry stools.

This medicine should be avoided if you have a known history of hypersensitivity (allergy) to pantoprazole.

There is inadequate data on use of pantoprazole during pregnancy. Pantoprazole may pass into breast milk. Please seek your doctor's advice before using this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.


Interactions with other medications

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, nutritional supplements or herbal products.

Some medicines and Pantoprazole may interfere with each other. Be sure to mention these medications: anti-viral medication (e.g. atazanavir), blood thinning medication (e.g. warfarin, clopidogrel), oral anti-fungal or anti-yeast medication (e.g. itraconazole, ketoconazole), immune system medication (e.g. methotrexate, tacrolimus), anti-epilepsy medication (e.g. phenytoin), anti-cancer medication (e.g. dasatinib, erlotinib), antidepressant (e.g. fluvoxamine).


Side effects

Common side effects: headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting.

Less common side effects: nausea,, flatulence, constipation. Dizziness and blurred vision may occur. If affected, please do not drive or operate machines.

Rare side effect: hypomagnesemia (low magnesium in the blood).

 

Handling and Storage

Keep out of reach and sight of children.
Store in a cool dry place. ​
Avoid direct exposure to sunlight. 
Keep this medicine in its original container until use.​​

 

When to seek further medical advice

Inform your doctor and/or pharmacist immediately if you experience any allergic symptoms or symptoms of serious side effects such as: swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat, difficulty in breathing or swallowing, skin itchiness and rash, swelling, blistering or peeling of the skin, bleeding or bruising more easily than normal, frequent fever, severe chills, sore throat or mouth ulcers, sudden and severe stomach pain, diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, dark brown urine, stomach pain or cramps, very loose or watery stools, or bloody stools.

If heartburn continues or worsens or if more than one course of treatment is taken every 4 months, consult your doctor.​​​​
