How Obesity Can Affect You

Obesity is not just a weight issue. It is a chronic, relapsing condition in which an increase in body fat can result in multiple health consequences.

Knowing the causes of your weight gain as well as screening for and tackling any health consequences arising from it is essential in the successful management of obesity.

Weight Management Programme

Weight management programmes are designed to empower participants to make positive lifestyle changes to achieve the best outcomes in terms of weight loss and sustainability.

Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) has a 24-week (approximately six months) Weight Management Programme that provides tailored advice so you can make lifestyle changes to help you succeed in your weight loss journey safely. Monthly or even bimonthly reviews are encouraged to enjoy the maximum benefits of this programme.

The programme comprises five phases:

Do note that phase three of the programme is flexible, comprising a range of sessions that can be selected to cater to each individual's unique needs (see table below).

Bariatric Surgery

Surgery is available for patients who satisfy certain criteria. These include extreme obesity, failure to lose weight with non-surgical means, or metabolic diseases (e.g. diabetes) that cannot be controlled by conventional means.

Various operations are available that can be tailored to each individual patient. These include:
    Sleeve gastrectomy
    Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
    Bilio-pancreatic diversion
    Adjustable gastric band

All of these are performed via laparoscopy (keyhole surgery), leading to less painful and faster recovery. In fact, 95 percent of KTPH’s patients stay not more than two days after their operation.

It’s important to note that bariatric surgery is not a quick fix solution for weight loss. All surgical patients need to make changes to their lifestyle and eating habits.

In addition, all surgical patients need a lifelong follow-up with their medical team, including their bariatric specialist, nurse coordinators, dietitians, physiotherapists and specialist doctors.

As part of the KTPH Bariatric Surgery service, the Singapore LapBandits run once every three months. This is a support group for those who have had bariatric surgery as well as those contemplating surgery. You can visit the group's Facebook page for more information.

Patient Classification

Several factors are taken into consideration when patients are classified as subsidised or private patients.
