Hydroxyzine and Promethazine

These medicines belong to a group of medicines known as antihistamines.


​What is this medication used for ​​ 

These medicines belong​ to a group of medicines known as antihistamines.

It can be used for short-term treatment of insomnia (difficulty sleeping) and to relieve itch.

Hydroxyzine can be used to relieve anxiety. 

Promethazine can be used for motion sickness. 

The medicine may also be used for other conditions – check with your doctor.

Dosage and How to Use 

Follow the directions on your medicine label and take the medicine as directed. If you feel that the medicine is not working well, do consult your doctor.

This medicine may be taken with or without food​

Side Effects, Precautions, Contraindication​​ 

Before using this medicine:​

Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had asthma, respiratory diseases, glaucoma, ulcers, difficulty urinating (due to enlarged prostate gland), heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, seizures (fits), overactive thyroid gland, autoimmune disorders, and also concomitant use with other sedative drugs or alcohol.  

FOR WOMEN: Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. 

Possible Side Effects​​

Like all medicines, this medicine may also cause some POSSIBLE side effects but not everyone experiences them. ​

What can I do about it?
​(Generally affect up to 10% of patients)
Most of the side effects below improve as your body gets used to the medicine. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist if they persist, worsen or become too bothersome. ​​
Tiredness; drowsiness​Avoid driving, or engaging in activities requiring concentration.​
DizzinessGet up slowly from sitting or lying down position.
Dry mouth
Chew sugar-free gum
Suck on sugar-free hard candies
Sip water regularly​
Speak with the doctor if it becomes bothersome.​

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience any of the following: 

~ Allergic reaction: skin rash, itching, difficulty in breathing, swollen tongue, lips, eyes, or face.

~ Restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw or neck

~ Increased nervousness & trembling

~ Severe muscle weakness 

~ Abnormal thinking or changes in behaviour

~ Confusion

~ Fast, slow or irregular heartbeat

~ Tremor (uncontrolled shaking)

~ Seizures (fits)

~ Problems with eyesight

If you have any concerns about your medicine or have other side effects that you think are caused by this medicine, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.​

Precautions while using this medicine:​​​

  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medicine as it can cause excessive drowsiness.
  • Taking some other medicines with this medicine may affect how they work. Be sure to tell your doctors, pharmacists, dentists and other health care providers who are treating you about all medicines and natural remedies that you are taking. 

Handling and Storage​​   

Store this medicine at room temperature, away from direct light, heat and moisture (not in the bathroom) and out of reach of children. Throw away any medication that is expired or no longer needed.

Do not share the medicine with other people.
