What is this medication used for

Budesonide belongs to the family of corticosteroids, which are used in the treatment of asthma and other breathing problems. They work by gradually reducing the swelling and irritation in the lungs which are often the cause of asthma attacks.

Dosage and How to Use

The usual dose is 1 to 2 inhalations once or twice daily. It comes in a dry powder for you to breathe in. It is meant as a “preventer” and needs to be used regularly for it to work properly. It takes a few weeks for best treatment effect to be reached.

Do not use Giona ® in the event of an asthma attack - it does not stop the attack. Use a “reliever” inhaler instead. Make sure you have a “reliever” inhaler handy.

This medication should be used on a regular schedule to get maximal benefits.

1. Remove the inhaler from the laminate pouch. Remove the mouthpiece cover.

2. Shake the inhaler vigorously up and down 3-5 times while keeping it upright. This is to make sure the powder flows properly and gives the correct dose.

3. Hold the device upright, gripping it between the finger and thumb. Squeeze once until a click is heard and let it return back to its original position. This delivers powder into the inhalation channel inside the mouthpiece. The dose is ready for inhalation.

4. Breathe out normally.

5. Place the mouthpiece between your teeth and close your lips around it, forming a tight seal. Inhale deeply through the inhaler.

6. Remove the mouthpiece from your mouth and hold your breath for as long as comfortable, and then breathe normally.  Once you can feel a slightly sweet taste in your mouth, you know that you have received your dose. Rinse mouth with water or brush teeth and spit any remaining traces of medicine in the mouth out. This helps to prevent the risk of fungal infection in the mouth.

7. If a second puff is required as prescribed, repeat steps 2 to 6.

8. Wipe the mouthpiece with a clean dry tissue and replace the mouthpiece cover. This stops the inhaler from being accidentally activated.

If you click the inhaler by mistake without inhaling the dose loaded, empty the dose out by tapping the mouthpiece against your hand or a table.

Missed a Dose

Take the dose as soon as you remember and then continue to take it as one normally would. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose that is missed and administer the next dose at the usual time. Do not double or increase the dose without your doctor's advice.

Side Effects, Precautions, Contraindication

What possible side effects may it cause?

Sometimes, inhaled budesonide causes a sore throat, hoarse voice or a cough. It can also cause thrush (fungal infection) in the mouth. Rinsing out your mouth with water or brushing your teeth after a puff can help to prevent these side effects, which are not serious. Do not stop taking Giona® ; talk to your doctor.

What precautions should I take?

Tell your doctor if you are allergic to budesonide (main ingredient) or to lactose (inactive ingredient). If you are, talk to your doctor before you use the inhaler.

Like other corticosteroids at high doses, budesonide may have an effect on the adrenal gland.

If your asthma, wheezing, or tightness in the chest gets worse, tell your doctor.

What other medications and foods should I avoid?

Ketoconazole or other similar medications may increase the amount of budesonide absorbed. The concurrent use of desmopressin may also enhance the effects of desmopressin on lowering sodium levels in the body. Kindly check with your doctor or pharmacist.

Handling and Storage

Store below 30 degrees Celsius and protect from moisture.

Clean the mouthpiece with a dry cloth at least once a week - do not use water or other liquids as the powder is sensitive to moisture.
