What is this medication used for

It is used to control and prevent symptoms (wheezing and shortness of breath) caused by asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Salmeterol is a long-acting bronchodilator that relaxes muscles in the airways to improve breathing. Fluticasone is a steroid that reduces inflammation in the lungs.

Dosage and How to Use

This medication should be used on a regular schedule to get optimal benefits, usually once in the morning and night.

1. To open your Accuhaler, hold the outer case in one hand and place the thumb of the other hand on the thumbgrip. Push your thumb away from you as far as it will go until a 'click' sound is heard.

2. Hold your Accuhaler with the mouthpiece towards you. Slide the lever away from you as far as it will go until it clicks. Your Accuhaler is now ready for use.

3. Hold the Accuhaler away from your mouth. Breathe out as far as comfortable. Put the mouthpiece in your mouth, forming a tight seal with your lips.

4. Breathe in steadily and deeply through your mouth. Remove the Accuhaler from your mouth and hold your breath for 10 seconds or as long as comfortable. Breathe out slowly.

5. To close the Accuhaler, put your thumb in the thumbgrip and slide it back towards you. When you close the Accuhaler it clicks shut, and is reset for the next use.

6. Rinse your mouth with water.

The amount of medication delivered is very small. Even if the patient does not feel or taste it, he/she can be confident that the medication is received if instructions are followed.

Every time the lever is pushed back, a dose is made available for inhalation (shown by dose counter). Do not play with the lever as this releases doses which will be wasted.

Missed a Dose

Take the dose as soon as you remember and then continue to take it as one normally would. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose that is missed and administer the next dose at the usual time. Do not double or increase the dose without your doctor's advice.

Side Effects, Precautions, Contraindication

What possible side effects may it cause?

This medication is generally well-tolerated. Headache, hoarseness of voice, cough, and fungal infection of mouth & throat can occur. Some of these side effects are less likely to occur if you rinse your mouth after each use.

What precautions should I take?

Do not stop or suddenly reduce your dose of Seretide. This could make your breathing worse.  Avoid contact with eyes.

If your asthma, wheezing, or tightness in the chest gets worse, tell your doctor.
